ABOUT PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods to help a person bring about personal changes and overcome difficulties. Psychotherapy emphasises building a strong therapeutic relationship between client and therapist, to provide a safe environment to talk about things that may be causing distress, and discuss ways to bring about changes.

Often people seek out psychotherapy services at times when they are feeling overwhelmed. Seeking support may be due to relationship difficulties, work related stress, parenting concerns, grief and loss, trauma, and mental health issues such as depression and/or anxiety. The presenting issue may be connected to a recent event, or could be linked to past experiences and/or patterns of relationships. Psychotherapy can help reflect on the ways we respond to experiences within ourselves, gaining more of an understanding of ourselves and others.

Psychotherapists are trained professionals who provide an ethical, confidential service. They are there to listen, and provide a trusting and empathic space for you to talk about things that you may not have shared with anyone before, perhaps due to fears of being judged or feeling shame.

OUR TEAM

Rochelle Nebbs

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and am a Registered Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. I am a full member of the New Zealand Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Association (NZACAP).

With over 20 years experience, I work with children, adolescents, families, adults and couples, offering brief, medium to long term psychotherapy. I also provide professional consultations and presentations to early childhood centres and schools, and within the workplace accessed through EAP services (Employee Assistance Programmes).

I started my professional working life at Child, Youth and Family (now known as Oranga Tamariki) where I worked for 5 years before starting in private practice. Over the years, I have been associated with agencies such as Rape crisis, Mirror Counselling Services (care and protection, caregiver support, and mental health services), and for the past 8 years, the STOP Trust (helping adolescents who have engaged in harmful sexual behaviour) as well as continuing in private practice for over 20 years (currently based in Invercargill, New Zealand).

Since I qualified as a Psychotherapist, I have continued to develop a particular clinical interest in trauma, grief and loss, as well as treating anxiety and depression.
